Prince's "Da, Da, Da" Features Rap by Scrap D,
circa 1996
from his Emancipation CD

Prince released "Da, Da, Da" in 1996 after he was finally free of his Warner Bros. contract. It is included on Disc 3 of his Emancipation CD, and to my knowledge he has never performed the song live; neither has he produced a music video for the song. I added the images to this video because listening to "Da, Da, Da," I decided the song is just as relevant now as it was in 1996. Unfortunately, when it comes to inner city problems and unemployment among African Americans, it's possible that this song will remain relevant for a long time.

Although Prince said in a 2009 interview with the LA Times that as a Jehovah's Witness he does not take political stands nor does he vote (not even for Obama), his music sometimes carries a political message. "Da, Da, Da" is one example of that. According to the website Prince Vault, some of the lyrics to "Da, Da, Da" are not included in the recording possibly because Prince wanted to end the song on a positive note.

Finally, the two vintage photos used early in this video that show black convicts are also used in Slavery By Another Name, the documentary based on the book of the same name. The documentary is slated to run on PBS in 2012.
