Schizophrenic Love Fugue

Written and Performed By Nordette Adams

She said, "In the overheated air pocket above my bed
I dreamed a lion came and stole my thoughts."

He said, "No, you laid them in his teeth,
mistaking hunger for affection."

She said, "He need not have crunched my sonnets
'til the words bled at my feet."

He said, "Lions do what lions do;
they do not bend to your election."

She sighed, "You have that lean and hungry look;
you're furry up and down."

He smiled. "Don't believe your eyes, my dear.
Believe the purrs I sound."

And with that she took his paw and through the jungle
they waltzed 'round. He ate her heart and she woke bloody.
What a mess when she was found.
